What's this guide about?
The recent v6.1.2 update introduced a new pack called the Diamond Wish Player Pack as a reward for completing all 30 new guide missions. Below is a guide on how to best make use of this item.
tl;dr Use the Companion Registry to figure out the options for your team and pick the strongest card that fills a need.
A note from the Companion dev
This guide was originally posted over on Reddit , and has been recreated here with permission from u/faraft. It's largely the same text, with some minor clarifications and an additional section on how to filter the registry for this event (see the link in the ToC). I highly recommend you join the conversation in the comments over on Reddit!
Also, check out ColdSlawter's guide, also on Reddit which has some great analysis for individual teams. You may remember ColdSlawter as the author of the main article in the Black Diamond Upgrade Guide .
How do I get this pack?
First off - in order to obtain this pack, you must complete the following 30 guide missions:
- Play League Mode 1 time.
- Change your League lineup.
- Use an equipment (ie gear) in the League Mode. Note: you don't actually have to play a game with gear, you can equip and immediately unequip.
- Use a condition drink.
- Use a challenge booster. These are the items that indicate "! x2" and double points earned during a League Mode game.
- Change your Battle lineup.
- Equip Battle gear. Same conditions seem to work as in #3.
- Play Ranked Battle 1 time.
- Purchase any Training at the Ranked Shop. If you've already purchased training before this is automatically met.
- Add 1+ friend. If you already have friends added this is automatically met.
- Play Friend Battle 1 time.
- Play Arcade Mode 1 time.
- Play the Clutch Hits Mode 1 time.
- Purchase a Player Pack from the shop.
- Use a Minor Grade Increase Ticket. This is the one that goes Bronze -> Silver. You should get one for free from #14.
- Use an Intermediate Grade Increase Ticket. This is the one that goes Silver -> Gold. You should get one for free from #15.
- Attempt player training 1 time or more.
- Use a Player Upgrade Ticket. You should get one for free from #17.
- Upgrade a skill 1 time or more. Just use a Skill Training Ticket (purchasable from Club shop) since you'll get one back from completion of #19.
- Join a club of your choice. Automatically met if you're already in a club.
- Equip Club Battle Gear. Same conditions as #3 and #7.
- Play Club Battle 1 time.
- Try Club Challenge 1 time.
- Craft an item from Club Crafting.
- Combine players 1 time.
- Utilize the Backup Players. You can complete this by moving a player to your Player Backup.
- Place bid with Point or Star in the Auction. Highly recommend just placing a random 50k point bid to complete the mission instead of using stars.
- Enter FA Recruitment. You don't actually need to sign a FA, just open the FA menu.
- Leave a comment on the player of your choice. On the back side of any player card that shows their stats/skills, there's a blue icon on the top right corner. Go there and leave a comment on any player.
- Try Live PVP 1 time.
Onto the fun stuff...
u/faraft's 9 Tips for making your pick
Tip 1: Find available players
You can pick literally any regular and currently active player. In other words...
- You can't pick any retired / otherwise unavailable players. For example, you can't pick any Buster Posey card, who recently retired and was removed from the game.
- You can't pick prime players, though you can pick a regular player for a prime year. For example, you can't pick the Aaron Judge '17 Prime, but you can pick the regular Aaron Judge '17.
- You can't pick any Vintage or Legend players.
Tip 2: Pick a Team Card
Pick a team card. Not going to go too deep into this but even if you're not currently going for a team set deck, you probably will be eventually. If you really don't want to, just search the Registry for the highest OVR / aOVR players and pick deGrom '21 or Pujols '06 or something.
Tip 3: Find your team's weakest points
Figure out where your team's weakest points are and find a player on your team that fills that hole.
Tip 4: Get literally the very best option for that weak point.
Since you can pick literally any active regular card, don't settle for anything other than the best. Caveat: probably a bit of nuance here if you already have a worse version of a particular card. For example, G. Cole '21 is marginally better than G. Cole '20, but the upgrade is so small that if I already have a Cole '20 I'd much rather go for another SP in L. Severino '17.
Tip 5: If you're a new player, strongly consider the best SP option
If you're a new player and you know your deck has a long way to go, conventional wisdom is to just pick the best SP option for your team since that helps in Friend battles / PVP / Club Challenge and SPs are generally more impactful. You can also consider picking the best batter (focusing on batting stats only) if you care more about Arcade mode.
Tip 6: Pick a player that isn't readily available elsewhere (i.e. Free Agency)
Maybe this doesn't apply to you if you aren't regularly checking FA updates (and this doesn't consider how the new FA system might work) but given that you can pick literally any player, I'd rather pick one who I can't get in FA. The Base OVR cutoff for pitchers is 72.0 and the cutoff for batters is 71.0. Another Yankees example, DJ LeMahieu '20 is one of the best 2B options, but since he shows up in FA every once in a while I might look elsewhere for my upgrade.
Tip 7: Think about the Sig Change Ticket (if applicable)
For players who haven't bought or used the Sig Change Ticket yet, keep that in mind when you're making your choice. Most high OVR players have a Sig year, so if you're planning on purchasing a Sig Change Ticket, you can use the Wish Player Pack to guarantee a Sig player of your choice without having to burn a GI.
Tip 8: Keep in mind your current projects / event plans
Keep in mind your current projects, such as the current Prime player event. Yet another NYY example, if you know you're pulling the Posada prime from this event and will use the offseason GI to bring him to diamond, don't bother going after a G.Sanchez card with your Wish Player Pack.
Tip 9: What to do if there are no players you want to pick
If there are no players left that would improve your starting lineup (because you have all the best options already or have team sigs), then the Wish Player Pack isn't as useful to you.
You can try getting a player who has no primes/sigs with your team for the purpose of making them a bench/LR player for the sole purpose of eventually getting Batters/Pitchers Chemistry (suggested by u/msalintorni).
Alternatively, you can pull a dupe of a player you already have to use as Black Diamond material.
Finally, you could hold on to the pack and see if new players get added or hope that a 22 card turns out well (suggested by u/9InningsCompanion).
How to filter the Registry for this event
The best way to filter the Companion Registry for this event:
- Set Card Type to just "Regular"
- Open More Filters and change Sort By to "OVR (desc)" or better yet "aOVR (desc)"
